Welcome to Montenegro, a hidden gem nestled in southeastern Europe, where breathtaking landscapes seamlessly merge with a vibrant Mediterranean ambience. As the sun-drenched days of summer cast their golden glow upon this picturesque nation, Montenegro emerges as a coveted destination for seekers of relaxation, adventure, and endless discovery.

As summer casts its spell, Montenegro reveals its irresistible charm, drawing travellers from near and far. It's a time when the country comes alive, brimming with festivities, cultural events, and the vibrant pulse of life. Savour the aroma of freshly caught seafood wafting from seaside restaurants, or sample the rich flavours of local wines and cheeses produced in the fertile valleys of the interior. This article is all about the places that you need to visit but also prepares you for summer season troubles, such as traffic and people jams that you might find yourselves stuck into. Enjoy!

WHY MONTENEGRO?

Let’s start with describing the scenery that will find you when you step foot on Montenegrin soil: Imagine yourself strolling along the narrow cobblestone streets of ancient towns, each echoing tales of bygone empires and civilizations. Lose yourself in the maze-like alleys of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where centuries-old stone walls stand guard over a mesmerising bay. Feel the sun's warmth on your skin as you bask in the charm of Budva's walled city, where sandy beaches and bustling promenades invite both leisurely lounging and vibrant nightlife.

WHERE TO STAY ALONG THE COAST?

One of our recommendations for you to stay here is resorts such as LazurePorto Montenegro, Portonovi or Lustica Bay, as these kinds of places have everything you need to make your favourite summer memories.

The more quiet recommendation is Ada Bojana, a charming island where the Bojana River meets the Adriatic Sea in southern Montenegro. With its sandy beaches, clear waters, and lush vegetation, it's a paradise for nature lovers. The island offers opportunities for beach relaxation, water sports like kitesurfing and windsurfing, and a laid-back bohemian atmosphere. Enjoy delicious seafood, vibrant nightlife, and picturesque river views. You can choose to stay at the river banks in the charming river houses called Sojenice, camp at the beach or even stay in the popular nudist camp if that is your cup of tea. Ada Bojana is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable experience for those seeking a blend of natural beauty and coastal charm.

But, if you are heading to the coast of Montenegro to spend your vacation, you need to know that the coastal part of Montenegro is where you will find the most traffic jams. Below, we’ll give you a list of the places and roads where you need to be prepared for a slow drive and be patient.
  • Kotor Bay: The coastal road around Kotor Bay, including the main road from Kotor to Tivat, can get congested during the summer. This is particularly accurate on weekends and during popular events and festivals in the region.
  • Budva: Budva is one of the most popular coastal towns in Montenegro, attracting a large number of tourists. The main road leading to Budva, especially from the direction of the capital city, Podgorica, can experience heavy traffic, especially during peak summer months.
  • Ulcinj: Ulcinj, located in the southern part of Montenegro, is known for its beautiful beaches. The road leading to Ulcinj, especially the stretch from Bar to Ulcinj, can be congested during the summer.
  • Adriatic Highway: Or Jadranska Magistrala in Montenegrin, is the main coastal road that runs along Montenegro's coastline. During the summer months, especially in popular resort areas such as Budva, Petrovac, and Herceg Novi, this road can experience heavy traffic, particularly on weekends and during peak travel times.

WHAT TO DO IN THE ADRIATIC HINTERLAND?

Montenegro's allure extends beyond its captivating coastal towns. Venture inland, and you'll be captivated by the dramatic landscapes that unfold before your eyes. Towering mountains, clad in emerald green, guard serene lakes and whisper secrets of epic legends.

Explore Durmitor National Park, a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts, where rugged peaks pierce the sky and crystal-clear rivers carve their path through the untamed wilderness. Traverse hiking trails that wind through dense forests, unveiling hidden glacial lakes like jewels nestled amidst the verdant valleys. The mirror-like surfaces of Black Lake (Crno Jezero) and Zminje Lake reflect the emerald hues of their surroundings, inviting you to lose yourself in their tranquil embrace.

Venture deeper into the heart of Durmitor, and you'll discover the dramatic Tara River Canyon, a breathtaking gorge that carves its way through the rugged terrain, offering panoramic vistas that will leave you spellbound.

When it comes to traffic jams, Durmitor National Park is located in the northern part of Montenegro and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The road leading to the park can experience traffic congestion as visitors head to the area quite often.
