A Weekend in the Montenegrin Highlands: Experiencing Swissôtel Resort Kolašin

Lifestyle Press Releases Retreats & Relaxation
Nestled in the serene alpine beauty of Northern Montenegro, Swissôtel Resort Kolašin recently hosted a select group of travel writers, journalists, and content creators for a special Media Weekend — and I was lucky enough to be among them as part of My Guide Montenegro. What followed was a beautifully curated escape blending nature, comfort, cuisine, and genuine hospitality that made me fall in love with Kolašin in a whole new way.

A Warm Welcome — Mountain Style

The experience began with a smooth check-in around 11:00 AM, setting the tone for what felt more like a retreat than a traditional media trip. From the very beginning, there was a sense of calm and care that carried through the entire stay.

My room was a perfect reflection of the surrounding mountain landscape — designed mostly in warm-toned wood, it had a charming rustic feel balanced with modern comfort. The bed was exceptionally cosy, the kind that gently cocoons you after a long day outdoors. One of my favourite features was the private terrace, which faced a peaceful pine forest, letting in fresh alpine air and offering a quiet spot for morning coffee or sunset unwinding.

The room also featured a small kitchenette, ideal for longer stays or those who enjoy a little extra flexibility. Complimentary water, coffee, and tea were a thoughtful touch, making it feel even more welcoming. The bathroom was spacious and elegant, equipped with Rituals cosmetics that left my skin feeling soft and refreshed — a true bonus after hiking and outdoor adventures.

By noon, we were gathered on the hotel’s sunny terrace for a welcoming drink and brunch, and it couldn’t have been more charming. Priganice — a traditional local pastry — served warm with fresh marmalade, cheese and raspberry juice (For me! For some, it was coffee, fresh mineral water or even rakia. wink), offered a perfect mix of simplicity and richness, and gave us a delicious first taste of this place.

From Hotel Comfort to Mountain Peaks

After brunch, it was time for a little altitude. We hopped on the Kolašin 1600 gondola, the very same one used by skiers in winter — but in summer, it becomes a sightseeing gem. Floating above the vast greenery and dramatic peaks of Bjelasica Mountain was surreal. The air was crisp, the views breathtaking, and every turn of the gondola offered a new perspective.

At the top, a surprise awaited us: a cosy picnic with hand-packed baskets, set at Troglava Peak. After enjoying the views and our fresh picnic sandwiches, some of us wanted to burn some calories, so we hiked toward the scenic lower pastures, where my favourite part of the day unfolded...

First Time on Horseback — And It Felt Like Home

I had never tried horseback riding before, and honestly, I didn’t expect much more than a basic intro. But the experience turned out to be so natural, so intuitive, that I felt instantly connected — as if that horse had known me forever.

We rode through the mountain trails for about an hour, but longer tours (even half or full-day rides) are available for guests who want to fully immerse themselves in the landscape. Mirko from @bjelasica_mountain was such a great host, giving you the freedom but, at the same time, security that you can do it. Most of our group didn't have much horseback riding experience until that day, but it all felt so natural. Now, I can not wait to ride a horse again! Thank you, Swissotel, for this special connection and feeling. It was easy to steal the heart of an animal lover with this kind of offer. :))

Chef’s Night — Balkan Cuisine with a Twist

After a brief rest back at the hotel, we reconvened for what would be the culinary highlight of the weekend: Chef’s Night at The Morel restaurant. Each edition has a theme, and that evening’s focus was Balkan Cuisine, elevated with finesse and creativity.

Chef Petar Ćorković joined forces with guest chef David Šimunić from Nine Square, Belgrade, crafting a menu that was as rooted in tradition as it was bold in presentation. Every course was a celebration of regional flavour, plated like art, and paired with warm, intimate hospitality and amazing local and regional wines. It was a meal to remember and above all, it felt like a family dinner, surrounded by like-minded people who enjoyed, laughed, shared, took millions of photos...

After that, we were all ready to indulge in our comfy beds and call it a night.

Spa Serenity & Sunday Brunch

The next morning, after a hearty buffet breakfast, I took time to relax at the hotel’s Calmé Wellness & Spa. The peaceful indoor pool, sauna, and treatment offerings truly reflect the resort’s connection to nature and well-being. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of mountain adventures.

Finally, we wrapped up the weekend with the Mountain Brunch — a signature Swissôtel tradition that I now understand why people talk about. Delicious regional ingredients, stunning mountain views, and that feeling of not wanting to leave.
