Description
Your journey begins in Virpazar, a small town known for its three bridges, situated beside Lake Skadar. After leaving the dock, you will follow a river channel bordered by reed fields and willow trees, leading to the open waters of Lake Skadar, the largest lake in southern Europe. Vranjina Island, with its twin peaks, will come into view.
The next stop is Vranjina Monastery, located on the island's southeastern side above the Morača river delta. This monastery is part of a group known as Zetska Sveta Gora, with a rich history dating back to the early 13th century, including the original monastery founded in 1223. Of the original complex, only the Church of St. Nicholas remains, having been restored multiple times.
The monastery has faced destruction, notably in 1862, but restoration efforts resumed in 1998 when a new abbot was appointed. The uphill walk to the Church of St. Nicholas offers views of the lake and Morača River, bordered by willow trees. The approximately ten-minute walk culminates in a visit to the church. On the return trip, guests can cool off with a swim in the lake.
