The Old Town of Podgorica or
Stara Varoš may not resemble the famous coastal towns such as Kotor, Budva, Herceg Novi, but it certainly has historical importance. It was built during the Ottoman rule and is now a neighbourhood near the city centre. The bombing of Podgorica during the Second World War destroyed a large part of the Old Town, so now the only visible traces of the former centuries-long Ottoman rule are Turkish mosques (Starodoganjska Mosque and Osmanagić Mosque) and the Clock Tower. At 4 km from the centre of Podgorica are the remains of the ancient town of
Doclea from the first decade of the 1st century AD. And on the 13th kilometre of Podgorica, lies the old town of
Medun, a high fortification built between 4th and 3rd century BC.
