Morinj
Morinj is hidden halfway from Kotor to Herceg Novi and is a former fishing village known for its olive mills. The only mill that remains today turned into a renowned restaurant Catovica Mlini.
This rustic resting place enchants visitors and tourists attracted by the delicious taste of shrimp, black risotto, and a wide range of local and international wines. This picturesque Mediterranean place was once more populated than Kotor but during the Black Plague, almost the entire population died, after which the place itself was named morila, moriti = Morinj (moriti literally means to kill). Nowadays, Morinj is one of the favourite tourist places for vacation, where the combination of tranquillity and harmony makes the stay especially pleasant.
Legend has it that old and young died equally in Morinj and that the inhabitants decided to seek help from clairvoyants. One of the clairvoyants, who allegedly had healing powers, said that it would be good to bury a live rooster with the deceased that would be a victim of the plague, and she believed that God would have mercy and get rid of the plague. The priest of the village did not agree with this but believed that only prayer could save them. He suggested that the big icon of the Most Holy Mother of God should be taken out of the church of St. John to the spring of water because the water is consecrated and blessed. He hoped that the village will be healed thanks to the prayer. As a sign of respect for the Most Holy Mother of God, every year on July 15th when, according to tradition, the saving healing took place, the people of Morinj take out Her icon from the church of St. John.
