Description

Nestled in the stunning Bay of Kotor, Montenegro, lies the picturesque islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela). This unique man-made island, steeped in history and legend, offers visitors an enchanting experience of Montenegro's rich cultural and religious heritage. The island, with its iconic church and museum, provides a captivating glimpse into the past and an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the Adriatic coast. A Glimpse into History and Legend The story of Our Lady of the Rocks is deeply rooted in local legend and the maritime traditions of the Bay of Kotor. According to folklore, the islet was created by local seamen who discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary and Child on a reef on July 22, 1452. Believing this to be a sign of divine intervention, the sailors vowed to build a church in her honor. Over the centuries, they carried out an annual tradition known as fašinada, where they would throw rocks and sinking old ships loaded with stones into the sea to gradually build up the island. This tradition of adding rocks continues to this day, with local residents participating in the fašinada every year on July 22. The custom not only commemorates the discovery of the icon but also serves as a testament to the enduring faith and communal spirit of the people of Kotor. The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks The focal point of the islet is the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, a Roman Catholic church that was completed in 1630. The church is renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture and its richly decorated interior. Visitors are immediately struck by the beautiful blue dome and the striking white facade that stands out against the azure waters of the bay. Inside the church, the walls are adorned with intricate frescoes painted by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century Baroque artist from Perast. These frescoes depict various scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, adding a layer of spiritual and artistic depth to the visitor experience. One of the most striking features of the church is the main altar, crafted from Carrera marble, which houses the revered icon of Our Lady of the Rocks.
