TEAMFORADRIS Project: Montenegro Actively Contributes to the Preservation of the Adriatic Sea

Editorial Inspiration

Innovative technologies, cooperation, and education in the service of marine ecosystem protection

The TEAMFORADRIS – Transnational mussEls preservAtion systeM FOR the ADRIatic Sea project, bringing together 10 partners from seven Adriatic-Ionian countries, aims to protect marine ecosystems, reduce mussel mortality, and safeguard the seagrass Posidonia oceanica.

Launched in September 2024, the project is implemented with the support of the Interreg IPA ADRION Programme and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund and IPA III.

Its main focus is the development of innovative digital tools – the ADRIS Platform, mobile application, and interactive dashboard – enabling real-time collection and analysis of marine ecosystem data. These tools foster evidence-based decision-making, enhance resilience to climate change, and promote the sustainable growth of the blue economy.

Joint efforts of institutions, science, and industry

Activities implemented in Montenegro contribute to the project’s transnational objectives through the engagement of relevant institutions, local communities, and economic actors.

During 2025, the Montenegrin project partner B Solutions strengthened cooperation with the Municipalities of Tivat and Kotor, the University of Montenegro, and the Shellfish Farmers’ Association of Boka Kotorska, with the goal of jointly defining priorities and opportunities for sustainable coastal management.

A key achievement in this period was the survey conducted among 40 Montenegrin stakeholders from the aquaculture sector, including mussel farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The research on marine ecosystem protection in the Adriatic-Ionian Sea, carried out in parallel among mussel farmers and stakeholders, collected valuable data sets for the ADRIS platform and included genetic sampling of mussels, the results of which will soon be published by the University of Thessaly – Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, following the completion of analysis.

Collected data on marine conditions, production challenges, and human impacts have been integrated into the project’s shared database. This contributes to a transnational analysis of the causes of mussel mortality and seagrass degradation across the Adriatic region, forming a foundation for subsequent project activities in the next two years.

Education and awareness-raising

The TEAMFORADRIS project recognises the importance of involving younger generations in marine biodiversity conservation. Following the example of partners from Slovenia, the introduction of the “Blue School” initiative is being considered in two primary schools in Montenegro. This educational programme aims to connect environmental protection with education, helping students better understand the importance of the sea for the environment, the economy, and climate stability.

Technology serving the sea

In the upcoming period, through the promotion of the ADRIS digital platform and national information events, the project will present new technological solutions and best practices for reducing the human impact on the marine environment. The platform will allow scientists, institutions, and businesses to monitor key ecological parameters and exchange data in one place, creating a basis for improved management and long-term planning in the aquaculture sector.

The Montenegrin partner B Solutions is contributing to the implementation of all project activities by providing technical and organisational support in communication with national and local stakeholders, as well as assisting in the preparation of the ADRIS platform and the dissemination of project results.

About the TEAMFORADRIS project
TEAMFORADRIS is an international initiative dedicated to marine biodiversity protection and the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Adriatic-Ionian region.
The project connects institutions, researchers, businesses, and local communities from Italy, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, creating a common framework for marine protection and the development of digital tools for ecosystem monitoring and management.
