Rumija Mountain
Montenegro
Rumija is a mountain in South Montenegro with great religious significance. Every year, the Cross of Jovan Vladimir is carried from the village of Velji Mikulići to the summit of Rumija during the Feast of Pentecost. This procession is not just limited to the Orthodox Christian community as Catholics and Muslims have traditionally taken part for many years on the ascent to Rumija summit. Rumija Mountain is 1,594 metres high and can be walked in a single day.
In 2005, the Serbian Orthodox Church mounted a metal church building on the summit, using helicopters deployed by the Air Force of Serbia and Montenegro. This addition to the mountain led to great controversy, as it had not been approved by the Montenegrin authorities. However, the church still stands on Rumija, so go and take a look!
