Saint Nikola's Island Budva (Hawaii)
Saint Nikola is the biggest island on the Montenegrin coast, located 1km away from Old Town Budva. The Island is also well known as Hawaii, because of the water around it, which has got that tropical blue color, and crystal clearness. The locals also call it Školj (it. scoglio - rock).
On the Island, there is a little church Saint Nikola which was built at the end of the XI century, and the Island got its name from Saint Nikola who was considered as a protector of sailors.
The island is 2 km long, and it has an area of 47 hectares. Saint Nikola's has got 3 beaches, which have a total length of 800 meters, but if you like privacy on the beach, you can find many places, like little coves in the rock when you can enjoy the Island all by yourself, or with your friends.
St. Nikola is connected with Budva by a small and narrow isthmus, called Tunja, which is about half a meter deep at low tide. At that time many courage locals and tourists try to get from Budva to the Island by foot, walking on the isthmus.
Besides that, the only way to come to the Island is by boats. In summer times boats, ferries, and cutters are going from Slovenska, Bečići and Mogren beach every half an hour for about 3 euros per person.
On St. Nikola Island there is a thick forest and rich and beautiful vegetation. You can find so many places to enjoy wild nature. Also, there are interesting animal species like deer, mouflons, wild rabbits, pheasants, and many different birds.
Also, the island is well known for diving around it, because of the breathtaking underwater world.
There are a fish restaurant and beach bars for those who like to stay all day long. Definitely, St. Nikola is a place you wouldn't like to miss if you are having your summer holidays in Budva.
