Fortress Citadela Budva
Montenegro
The Budva Citadel is ancient and beautiful, and set at the highest point of the town itself. Thought to have been built atop the Budva ancient Acropolis, the views from within the citadel are unequalled, showcasing the tremendous splendour of one of Montenegro's most celebrated locations.
The Citadel was built in 1936 by the Austrian Army, in order to house the hoards of troops that were stationed at the coast during WW2, and is not only a tourist attraction due to its privileged viewpoint. It is also the location of the town museum, and a stately library, which are both open to the public.
In the evening, the Citadel and surrounding area comes alive with bars and restaurants. In the summer months, it is transformed into a stage for the annual City Theatre Festival. At any time of year or day, the Citadel is enchanting and historic, gently unfurling Budva's past, or playing a part in its present.
