Description
Ostrog Monastery is Montenegro's largest Orthodox sanctuary and a key religious destination. It attracts up to a million pilgrims and tourists annually, regardless of religion. The monastery is carved into a nearly vertical cliff, 900 meters above sea level, on Ostroška Greda rock, creating a striking and unusual setting.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog, the Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina and its founder. His remains are housed in one of the cave churches, where priests maintain a constant vigil. Established in the 17th century, the complex includes the Lower Monastery with the Church of The Holy Trinity, and the Upper Monastery, which features the Church of the Presentation and the Church of the Holy Cross, both built into natural cave formations.
A more recent addition is the church dedicated to the Holy Martyr Stanko, a 15-year-old shepherd who was tortured and killed during the Turkish occupation for refusing to renounce his faith. His remains are kept in this church. The frescoes inside the cave churches are painted around the natural contours of the rock and remain well preserved.
