Departure from TiranaOur journey begins in the bustling capital of Albania, Tirana. We set off towards the central-southern region of the country, passing through picturesque landscapes before making our first stop at the enchanting Belsh Lake, a hidden gem in the heart of the Dumre region. Known for i lush surroundings, this peaceful lake is perfect for a short break, allowing us to take in the breathtaking scenery and snap some unforgettable photos. Exploring Berat – The City of a Thousand WindowsContinuing our drive, we arrive in Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage city since 2008, famous for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and rich history spanning over 2,400 years. Nestled along the Osum River, Berat is a stunning blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Albanian heritage. Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit)Our first stop in Berat is the iconic Berat Castle, perched high above the city. This impressive citadel, dating back to the 13th century, is still inhabited today and offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding valley. Within the castle walls, we explore a maze of narrow cobbled streets and discover Byzantine churches adorned with ancient frescoes and remnants of Ottoman influence. Notable churches include The Holy Trinity Church and St. Mary of Blachernae, which showcase remarkable medieval Orthodox art. Mangalem & Gorica QuartersDescending from the castle, we stroll through the historic Mangalem district, known for its traditional white-walled Ottoman houses stacked along the hillside, creating the famous “City of a Thousand Windows” effect. Across the Osum River, we admire the charming Gorica Quarter, its stone houses and arched windows mirroring those of Mangalem, creating an extraordinary symmetrical skyline. Walking across the Gorica Bridge, a 17th-century Ottoman relic, provides a perfect vantage point for stunning photographs. Traditional Albanian LunchAfter exploring Berat’s rich heritage, we indulge in a traditional Albanian lunch at a local restaurant, where we savor authentic dishes such as Tave Kosi (baked lamb with yogurt), Byrek (savory pie), and Berat’s famous local wine. Scenic Return Journey through the Tuscany of Albania. As we leave Berat behind, our return journey to Tirana takes us through the breathtaking rolling hills of lush vineyards, olive groves, and tranquil lakes—an area often referred to as “the Tuscany of Albania.” This stunning countryside offers a perfect final impression of Albania’s natural beauty before we arrive back in Tirana.
