Kanli Tower (Bloody Tower) is a monumental fortress in Herceg Novi which dates back from the times when Montenegro was occupied by the Ottomans. Back then, it served as a prison, so that’s how it got its name - Kanli Tower on the Turkish language means - Bloody Tower. Today it’s a most beautiful summer stage, some would say, in ex Yugoslavia.
The Tower was built by the Turks after 1539, and it mostly preserved original look. On it walls we can still see drawings with fish, crosses, names and dates which were made by prisoners at the time of the Turks.
The interior of Kanli Tower was restored for the first time in 1960 for the purpose of summer stage. It has got thousands of seats and a beautiful and functional amphitheatre. The Tower was under reconstruction after a major earthquake in Montenegro in 1979, which was carried out in Venetian style. Today, Kanli Tower is considered as a cultural centre of Montenegrin coast where you can see many theatre plays, concerts and festivals.
