Description
This tour starts in Kotor, ascending the historic royal road from the Kingdom of Montenegro era. Known as the serpentine road, it features 25 switchbacks with views of the Bay of Kotor below.
The road holds a local legend: its curves between Kotor and Trojica form the letter “M.” Josip Slade-Šilović, the road’s engineer, reportedly designed it as a tribute to Princess Milena. Locals joke that if he had loved Princess Olga instead, the road might never have ended.
Next, visit Njeguši village between Kotor and Lovćen National Park. Here, sample and purchase local specialties such as prosciutto, cheese, olives, wine, and brandy. Njeguši was historically the center of Montenegrin leadership and culture.
Then, climb 441 steps to the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. This six-sided chapel houses a 4-meter granite statue by sculptor Ivan Meštrović, carved from a single 50-ton block. The golden mosaic ceiling contains 200,000 gold pieces. From the mausoleum exit, a vast view of Montenegro’s mountains and landscapes spans almost 70% of the country.
The journey continues to the Kotor Cable Car station. At the top, enjoy coffee and mountain air while overlooking the bay. The cable car ride descends from 1,350 meters to 65 meters elevation in 11 minutes, offering views of Kotor Bay and nearby towns.
