Description
Starting just 10 to 15 minutes from Podgorica, the tour enters the Moraca River canyon, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs towering over 1000 meters. After about 40 minutes of driving with stops at key viewpoints, you will enjoy views of the clear river waters and the canyon carved over centuries.
After roughly one hour, the tour reaches Moraca Monastery, one of Montenegro’s oldest and most significant religious sites. Founded in the mid-13th century, it served as a religious and educational center and played a role in Montenegro’s liberation from the Ottoman Empire. The monastery is located near a waterfall, surrounded by old forests, and offers a serene setting. Inside, the frescoes and icons created by prominent Byzantine artists highlight the region’s artistic heritage.
The journey continues north through mountainous terrain toward Biogradska Gora National Park. This area is known for its ancient forest, one of the few in Europe that remains largely intact, glacial lakes, rivers, and rich flora. Visitors can walk along an easy path surrounding Biogradsko Lake, observe diverse woody plants, and enjoy fresh mountain air. The park also offers opportunities for picnics or tasting local specialties at a nearby restaurant.
Before returning to Podgorica, the tour visits Kolašin, a mountain town renowned for its ski resort on Bjelasica Mountain, its tango festival, historical significance in Montenegro’s liberation, and its local culinary and alcoholic specialties.
