Budva, the capital of Montenegrin tourism has been proudly wearing the title of the “Montenegrin Miami” for years. Not only dynamic nightlife with open-sky beach parties, world-famous DJ at local clubs and festivals but also the Old Town mystique, nearby islands and sandy beaches are just some of the reasons why Budva should be on your bucket list.

Centred on the Budva Riviera, this coastal town is one of the oldest settlements in this part of the Adriatic, dating back from the 5th century BC according to some documents. So when you happen to be in Budva this is the point from where you should start to explore the city, the places, and monuments of historical importance. The first ones are the Old Town and the Citadel, the keepers of Budva’s history.

A must-visit: Old Town and the Citadel

The Old Town of Budva testifies about the long history that this town has. Rising from the waters, this 2.500 old town is truly an astonishing historical site. You can wander through churches and palaces from medieval times, getting to know the rich history of the city. There is also a museum, City Walls and the unavoidable Citadel.

The medieval city fortress of Saint Mary (or the Citadel) was originally built in order to protect Budva from attacks from the sea. For years it has been a monument of fortification architecture, but only the north tower and the northern and eastern walls, together with the buildings of the former barracks, gates, and ruins of the church of Saint Mary have been preserved. While being the state property, Citadel has been used as the scene for the “City Theatre Festival”, but now it is private property and entrance is being charged.
