Stoliv is a settlement in the Bay of Kotor made of two parts Donji and Gornji Stoliv. Donji Stoliv lays along the coast, and it consists of a series of stone houses located at the foot of the slope of the part of Vrmac, which separates Kotor from Tivat Bay. A series of stone houses that are built in a typical coastal style, with their size, speak of the power of the owners from previous times. The data say that Stoliv was mentioned as early as the first half of the 14th century.

The name Stoliv usually refers to Donji Stoliv because it is inhabited and recognised by the events held here. Legend has it that it has gotten its name from the olive groves. Namely, every guy who wanted to get married had to plant a hundred olive trees. The olive is called oliva in Italian so one-hundred olives eventually derived the name Stoliv ('sto' means hundred in Montenegrin). There are other versions of how the city got its name, but this one is the most accepted.
