Sasko Lake in Ulcinj

Places of interest

Sasko Lake is located close to the city of Ulcinj, in the Ulcinj field, and it has 5,5 sq km of surface and it’s 8 m deep. During the summer months, this lake is hardly visible from the distance, as the water level is much lower, but in the winter time it usual floods the field around.

This is a perfect spot for a nice day-trip, at any time of the year. During the summer, you can swim, play sports, ride a boat on the lake and during the winter it can be a wonderful spot for a picnic or birdwatching experience.

The legend says that one of the most favourite rulers of Montenegro, King Vladimir, was obliged to give his freedom to the Bulgarian ruler Simeon II so that he can keep Montenegrins alive and safe. Simeon II had put king Vladimir into prison and tortured him until he lost his eye-sight. But, Simeon’s daughter Kosara fell in love with Vladimir and decided to save him from the prison by marrying him. She vowed to build 365 churches in this region, one for each day of the year, to be able to recover Vladimir’s vision. Remains of 8 churches are still here by the Sasko Lake that is located quite close to the remains of the ancient city of Sas (or Svac), by which the lake got its name.

This lake is another cryptodepression (meaning it’s below the sea level) in Montenegro, together with the biggest cryptodepression in Balkans – Skadar Lake. Sasko Lake is very rich in nature and flora and fauna so you can find many endemic species of birds here, which makes it a paradise for the ones who are coming to Montenegro to do birdwatching trips.
