River Zeta Nature Park
One of the rivers without which there would be no life in central Montenegro, River Zeta has been declared a Nature Park in 2019, by the decision of the Government of Montenegro, at the initiative of the Municipality of Danilovgrad. Thus, Zeta became an area of special importance for Montenegro, having in mind the significance of its biodiversity.
The total length of the Zeta River is about 85 km. The river originates in Gornje Polje from the rivers Sušica and Rastovac. From the springs of Perucica and Obostica, the watercourse of Donja Zeta is formed, which flows into the river Moraca.
The valley of the River Zeta and the river itself is an important ecosystem for Montenegro. Of the 352 registered bird species in Montenegro, 20% of the total number are bird species present in this area. As many as 774 species of plants have been registered in the Zeta River Valley, which is again slightly more than 20% of plant species in Montenegro.
At a distance of 12 km from Danilovgrad, there is a nature reserve on River Zeta, Tunjevo. It has spring water and an attractive beach, and this is the place where the residents of surrounding towns come for a mini-vacation or an escape of 40 degrees in the Bjelopavlici Plain in the hot summer days.
The river Zeta is also known for its bridges. The most famous is the main bridge in Danilovgrad, which is one of the symbols of this city. It was built in 1869 when Prince Nikola started creating a new town in the Bjelopavlici Plain. There is also the Emperor's Bridge (Carev Most), which you will come across when you set off for Nikšić, on the old road from Podgorica. It is said to be one of the most beautiful bridges in Montenegro, as according to the historical sources, King Nikola ordered the bridge to be gold-plated, so one gold coin was built into each pillar of the bridge. The bridge itself is 269 meters long and was built in 1894.
Together with the catering facilities located nearby, this nature park provides everything you need for a complete and true experience of the Zeta River. Furthermore, every year, the traditional event 'Spuško Ljeto' (Spuz Summer) is held on the river’s beach, which gathers various sports teams and societies from Montenegro in this magnificent natural environment.
