Nature Park Piva

Montenegro

Places of interest

Newly established nature park with the goal to show all the beauties of this region!

Piva Nature Park is located in the northwest Montenegro, covering 39% of Pluzine municipality territory. The surface area of the park is 32 477,9 ha. This park is amazingly rich in nature with varied terrain in which most is taken up by mountains covered in grass and woods, followed by stunning canyons of rivers Tara, Piva, Susica and mountain lakes, (so called forests’ eyes) Stabanjsko and Trnovacko.

More than 20 small villages complete the picturesque landscapes of this park, perfectly set inside the natural environment and detailed with old-style architecture and traditional katun. These villages are the greatest education about the history, culture and tradition of this part of Montenegro. Nature was very generous to this part of the country and is home to the rarest collections of protected fauna and flora species.

The climate conditions of this region result in the various types of ecosystems and habitats. Warm air from the Mediterranean allows mediterranean flora and fauna to flourish along the canyons and river valleys, especially the rivers of Tara and Piva and on the top of the mountains there are alpine climate influences.

Piva Nature Park has over 1,500 rare or endangered plant species. Locals successfully use these plants for medicinal purposes or even food on occasion. There are more than 200 types of mushrooms and a lot of those are used as nourishment. Flora treasures consist of white & black pine, beech, fir, maple and spruce forests.

Piva Nature Park is home to wild boars, deer and even bears. Tara and Piva rivers are extremely rich in trout, grayling and sprout fish.

Situated in the middle of the park is the stunning small town of Pluzine, resembling Switzerland, laying on the manmade shores of Piva lake it’s surrounded by spectacular mountains and hilltops. To create the lake, the river was damned and still used for electricity production today. This dam is one of the most interesting tourist points in the park. Following the dam’s Mratinje construction, people moved the city of Pluzine to its new location in 1967-1975.

This city is home to some of the best rafting guides, who will help you experience the strength of Tara river and experience unforgettable excitement. Tara’s canyon is the 2nd deepest canyon in the world, after Colorado in USA.

Professional guides can also help you explore the challenging Nevidio canyon, on Komarnica river. At some points the fall is so steep you cannot see Komarnica river flow beneath you. Resulting in numerous waterfalls over 100m high.

Beside Piva lake everyone is welcome to join the cruise on Trnovacko, Stabanjsko and Skrcko Lake or enjoy the mountains of Volujak, Durmitor and Maglic.

Don’t forget to visit the sacred Piva Monastery and discover the amazing history behind it.
