Once a fortified village dating back to the 15th century, the island of Sveti Stefan is a uniquely atmospheric setting of cobbled lanes, quaint courtyards and remarkable sea views.
The re-opening of this iconic resort was a long time coming, but it was certainly worth the wait. Combining a tiny island, attached to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, and a 32 hectare estate that includes the stately Villa Milocer, once the summer residence of Queen Marija Karadjordjevic, this is a complex, sprawling property that merits leisurely exploration.
Aman have managed to secure 2km of pristine perfectly manicured coastline for their guests here. These beaches are private but outsiders may hire sunbeds and an umbrella for the day. It's not cheap but it's not meant to be either, you're paying for the peace and quiet.
Dining options include the informal Olive restaurant, the Villa Milocer which is more upscale but not officially open to the public, and then there are the pasticceria, enoteca, taverna, antipasti bar and cigar room on Sveti Stefan island itself.
Finally, the 58 rooms, cottages and suites are split between the island and Villa Milocer (50/8 respectively) yet all share a similar aesthetic that combines clean, contemporary lines with respect for the imposing legacy of this richly historic location.
